Young scholar named Zhu, accompanied by his servant, Hou, journeys to the capital to take the imperial examinations. Near an ancient temple, they clash with a swordsman named Meng but later befriend him thanks to the intervention of a monk. Inside the temple, Zhu discovers a mural of painted fairy maidens. To his delight, one of the maidens in the mural comes to life before his very eyes.
